What is old, is new again. Many games being released now are sequels or remakes of games past. Younger gamers are getting a chance to play remastered versions of classic or lesser known titles on current generation consoles. Lizard Cube and DotEmu recently published Wonder Boy : The Dragon’s Trap which is an updated version of the 1989 game Wonder Boy 3 : The Dragon’s Trap.
You play as an adventurer who must defeat an evil dragon. The only problem is just before he dies, he casts a curse on you transforming you into a lizard man. Now you must track down other dragons to try and cure this affliction. Your quest will take you across multiple lands and through the adventure of a lifetime.
This is an action adventure platformer that will test your skills. Since the game lacks manual save points, and only saves once you clear an area you will have to take care on your trek. You will have to take care as you journey through levels to make sure that you have enough health to defeat the boss when you encounter him. You can earn money that can be put towards new armor and weapons that are better suited to fight bigger foes. If you are luckily enough to have played the original and still have some of the passwords, they still work in this version. If this is your 1st time playing the game, you can still find some of them in the game from a vendor.
The graphics are beautifully hand drawn. The game has an entirely different feel than the original. If you are pining for the original, all you have to do is press a button and you will be transported to the original 1989 graphics. The music from the original is also included for a full retro experience. The updated music is beautiful and fits the original story perfectly.
Wonder Boy : The Dragon’s Tale is out now on most platforms. If you are feeling nostalgic for the days of Sega home consoles, this is definitely a title you should pick up. Fans of adventure games should also consider adding this one to their collection.
