Mythwrecked : Ambrosia Island

Alex is on a long-awaited vacation in the Greek Isles when things start to go awry.  A local sea captain offers to take you on a tour of the islands that are not crowded with tourists.  While on route to your first destination a strange storm comes across the horizon and swallows up your boat.  You wake up some time later on the shore of what seems to be a deserted island.

This is the set up for the newest game from developer Polygon Treehouse and publisher White Thorn Games.  Mythwrecked – Ambrosia Island is a casual adventure game that has you exploring an island, befriending the locals, and help them recover their memories so they can retake their rightful place on the island.  The residents are not your typical islanders, they are Gods of Greek myth, but no longer have their powers.   You must discover the secrets that the island holds, restore balance, and find your way back home.

The heart of this game is the exploration of the island.  Each God you meet will give you a quest that must be completed around the island.  As you work on the quest, you will gain friendship with the God, and then must search out personal items of theirs to help recover their memories.  As you encounter multiple Gods, you must figure out what items belong to each.  It is not that difficult to figure out, and there is always an Oracle to give you some hints.

Graphics in the game run a bit on the cartoony side.  The colors are a bit muted, and all the characters have been updated to modern times.  Some of the Gods almost come off as caricatures of themselves.  Since they have been given new back stories, the new looks make them into totally new characters.

You will have to read a fair amount if you want to keep up with the story.  Although some of the dialogue is voiced, it is mostly “yeah” and “thank you”, everything else is represented with grunts, groans, and other nonsensical noises.  The rest of the soundscape is interesting and fits well with the island story line and vibe that the developers have created.

This is a casual game that can be played in one long sitting, 8 hours, or broken up into smaller pieces.  It is a good introduction to adventure games for newer or younger players.  The fresh take on Greek Gods makes the story interesting but could frustrate purists.  Overall, Polygon Treehouse has created a game that will delight a wide variety of gamers.  With a price tag of around $25, the game is one to put on your radar.  Available now for Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
