Almost every game on the market has some sort of physics element. Other games rely almost entirely on physics. Games that focus on hitting a ball or flinging a bird are just a few examples. Ratalakia Games has released Midnight Deluxe, a physics based game that will test your aim and resilience.
You play as Midnight, a small square of light that must make it through each level to the final exit portal. This is done by catapulting him through the air at the correct angle and speed. Levels are filled with obstacles that will kill you if you even touch them. You can also die if you catapult yourself beyond the limits of the level.
Gameplay is pretty tight. You press and hold the A button then use the left stick to pick the direction and strength of your shot. It can be a bit difficult to make precise shots, especially with older controllers. You earn stars based on the number of shots it takes to make it into the exit. Luckily, no matter how many shots it takes you, you will always earn at least 1 star. And once you complete a level, the next one will automatically unlock. With over 70 levels that get harder and more complex as you proceed there is no shortage of content.
Graphics are fairly simple, but remain nice and clear. Since you are a small cube of light, there is a specific dark color palette. The background looks like perpetual dusk. Obstacles and traps are done in black, so they are easy to distinguish. The soundtrack is beautiful. You are gently wrapped in piano songs that will defuse any frustration you might feel if you are having trouble completing a level.
Midnight is out now on most consoles. With a price tag of less than $5 it us worth the money. The game can be rushed through in in around an hour or so to get all the achievements, but they only cover the 1st 40 levels and earning 3 stars on 1 level. This means that you can continue to improve you rating on each level and finish the last 30 or so levels just to test your skill.
