One of the things that I really enjoy about video games are the stories they tell. Artifex Mundi is one company that is very adept at telling stories that are interwoven with challenging game play. Kingmaker : Rise to the Throne is their latest game to make its appearance on consoles and it does not disappoint.
You play as one of a pair of brothers entrusted to protect the King. Things don’t go as planned, the King is murdered in a coup and you are framed. It is up to you to prove your innocence, save the kingdom, and make sure the rightful heir to the throne ascends to be the new King.
The story unfolds through exploring the kingdom. In each location you will learn more about the kingdom, the history of the characters, and have to find the tools to forward your story. You will have to find objects scattered around the kingdom to solve the puzzles you encounter. Items are either left about the scenes or in hidden object puzzles. These items are used to activate mini-games or open up new paths.
Gameplay focuses a lot on the hidden object puzzles and mini-games. The hidden object puzzles are some of the best the company has produced. Not only are items well hidden, but the clues can be a bit tricky. The list may say you are looking for scissors, but hidden in the picture may be sewing scissors, paper scissors, or even hedge clippers. This means that you need to think outside of the box when it comes to searching. Many of the mini-games are similar to those in previous titles from the company, but they will still challenge you.
Graphics in the game are beautiful. Most scenes are still frames and are very intricately drawn. There are over 20 coin bags that are hidden on the main pages of the story. These items are all identical, but they fade in and out of display, so they get a bit difficult to find. The music is just as stunning as the graphics. The soundtrack is enjoyable to listen to and the soundscape is meticulously constructed. Listen to the rain, animals, and squeaky floors layered throughout the game.
Kingmaker : Rise to the Throne is out now. If you are new to hidden object puzzle games, this is a great introduction. If you are a veteran of the puzzle genre, this title is a good addition to your library. Artifex Mundi has a bunch of other hidden object games to play, several with arching story lines, but this title shines just a bit brighter.
