Let’s face it, there are some games that when you see a screenshot or a short video clip you just want to play it. The graphics just scream at you and call for you to play – no matter what the genre. I will admit the moment I saw Candle – The Power of the Flame I was drawn in by the graphics and fired off a message to Merge Games asking for a copy of the game without any more information.
You play as Teku, a young novice who must rescue his tribes shaman, who has been kidnapped by an evil neighboring tribe. The Wakcha are a devious bunch, leaving traps behind them as well as some soldiers that will kill you on sight. Luckily, Teku has a little trick up his sleeve. His left hand is a candle which can be used to light your way, reveal hidden objects, and other helpful things. Will you be able to overcome the Wakcha and save your Shaman before it is too late?
To rescue your Shaman you will need to solve puzzles, preform some platforming and traverse through an enchanting world. You will have to use your powers of observation and deduction to figure out how to solve the puzzles. You will pick up items that will be used throughout your adventure, but the trick is knowing just what is used when. Some of the puzzles are pretty intuitive, while others will leave you scratching your head until something random brings it all together.
The first thing you will notice about Candle is the unique graphics. Background scenes and characters are all hand drawn and then scanned. The coloring is hand painted watercolors, which gives it a beautiful flowing feel. The attention to detail is also remarkable. If you look closely in several places you can see hints on how to solve puzzles drawn right into the details of the backgrounds. The music in the game is spot on. From quiet notes as you are tip toeing around to more epic background music as you face off against the Wakcha.
Candle – The Power of the Flame is out now on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch. A beautiful game that combines style and substance in an amazing experience for all gamers. You will work through head scratching puzzles and fast paced action sequences all while learning to harness the flame.
